가상의 토지를 사고 파는데 사용되는 잘 알려지지 않은 암호화폐인 마나(Mana)는 페이스북(Facebook)이 Meta(메타)로 리브랜딩하자 주말 사이 가격이 급등했다.
코인마켓캡(CoinMarketCap)의 데이터에 따르면 지난 토요일 저녁 마나의 가격은 사상 최고치인 4.16달러를 기록했다. 페이스북이 이름을 메타로 바꾼다고 발표한 직후 거래가의 400%에 해당하는 금액이다. 마나는 마지막으로 약 3.16달러에 거래된 이후 하락세를 보이고 있다.
페이스북의 리브랜딩 목표는 여러가지 이슈로 궁지에 몰린 소셜 미디어 회사가 메타버스로 초점을 전환하는 것이라고 CNBC는 말했다.
2017년 출시된 마나는 사용자가 가상 자산을 사고 팔 수 있는 자칭 메타버스 플랫폼인 디센트럴랜드(Decentraland)의 기본 디지털 토큰이다. 누가 무엇을 소유하고 있는지 추적하기 위해 일종의 디지털 자산인 NFT를 통해 구매된다. 이는 세계에서 두 번째로 큰 디지털 통화인 이더리움에서 실행된다.
암호화폐 거래소 루노(Luno)의 아시아 태평양 책임자인 비제이 아이야르(Vijay Ayyar)는 페이스북의 브랜드 변경에 힘입어 마나를 포함해 기타 메타버스 중심의 암호화폐에 대한 수용도가 높아지고 있다는 신호로 풀이된다고 말했다.
아이야르는 “메타버스 개념이 이제 주류로 인식되고, 곧 상용화된다는 측면에서 “나는 이것을 투기꾼들과 투자자들 사이에서 이러한 메타버스 개념이 주류 인식에 도달하고 곧 채택될 것이라는 확신이 퍼졌다”고 말했다.
블록체인 기반 게임인 엑시 인피니티(Axie Infinity), 더 샌드박스(The Sandbox)의 토큰을 포함한 다른 암호화폐도 지난 며칠간 견조한 상승세를 보였다.
아이야르에 따르면, 비트코인이 지난달 거의 6만 7천 달러에 육박하는 최고치를 기록한 후 비트코인에 대한 관심이 줄어들기 시작하면서 더 작은 암호화폐 또는 알트코인을 찾는 사람이 늘었다고 한다.
“일반적으로 비트코인이 사상 최고치를 넘어서면 다른 알트코인으로 자금이 유입되는 것을 볼 수 있다”라고 그는 말했다.
한편, 지난 주 도지코인에 도전하는 밈 토큰인 시바이누는 로빈후드가 거래플랫폼에 코인을 추가할 수 있을지에 대한 추측 속에서 급격한 상승을 보였다. 현재는 시가 총액이 396억 달러 이상에 도달해 도지코인을 앞섰다.
Mana, a little-known cryptocurrency used for buying and selling virtual land, saw its price spike over the weekend amid excitement over Facebook’s rebrand.
The price of mana hit an all-time high of $4.16 on Saturday evening, according to CoinMarketCap data, up 400% from where it was trading shortly after Facebook announced it was changing its name to Meta. It has fallen since, having last changed hands at around $3.16.
Facebook’s rebrand was aimed at shifting the embattled social media company’s focus toward the “metaverse,” a kind of shared virtual reality in which multiple users can interact with each other and digital objects.
Launched in 2017, mana is the native digital token of Decentraland, a self-proclaimed metaverse platform where users can buy and sell virtual properties. Ownership of the land is purchased through non-fungible tokens, a type of digital asset meant to track who owns what. It runs on Ethereum, the blockchain network behind ether, the world’s second-largest digital currency.
Vijay Ayyar, head of Asia Pacific at cryptocurrency exchange Luno, said mana and other metaverse-focused cryptocurrencies were rallying on the back of Facebook’s rebrand, which is being seen as a sign of growing acceptance of the metaverse trend.
“I read it as an interpretation of a vote of confidence amongst both speculators and investors that this concept of a metaverse is now taking a serious turn in terms of reaching mainstream consciousness and — soon — adoption,” Ayyar said.
Other cryptocurrencies, including the tokens of blockchain-based games Axie Infinity and The Sandbox, have also seen solid gains the past few days.
Investors are looking to smaller alternative cryptocurrencies, or “altcoins,” as interest in bitcoin has begun to peter out after the world’s largest digital coin hit a record high of nearly $67,000 last month, according to Luno’s Ayyar.
“Typically, once Bitcoin crosses an all-time high, we see money flow into other altcoins,” he said.
Last week, shiba inu — a “meme token” challenging dogecoin — rallied sharply amid speculation over whether Robinhood could add the coin to its trading platform. It now ranks ahead of dogecoin, with a market capitalization of over $39.6 billion.
