중국의 스마트폰 대기업 샤오미가 공식적으로 전기 자동차 사업을 등록하고 사업 부문은 현재 ‘실질적인 발전 단계’에 진입했다고 밝혔다.
자회사 이름은 샤오미 EV(Xiaomi EV)이며 이전에 발표된 등록 자본금 100억 위안(15억 5천 만 달러)으로 설립되었다.
지난 3월 샤오미는 전기차 사업을 시작하고 향후 10년간 100억 달러를 투자할 계획이라고 밝혔다. 샤오미 EV는 현재 300명의 직원을 두고 있으며 그룹 설립자이자 CEO인 레이쥔(Lei Jun)이 사업을 이끌고 있다고 회사는 전했다.
샤오미는 자사의 전기차 팀이 지난 5개월 동안 “다량의 사용자 연구를 수행했다”고 밝혔다. 또한 “EV 제품 정의 및 팀 구성을 추진”하며 업계 파트너를 확장했다.
회사는 아직 차를 공개하지 않았으며 이달 초 샤오미는 전기차 사업의 “기술 경쟁력 강화”를 위해 자율주행 업체 딥모션(Deepmotion)을 약 7,737만 달러에 인수했다고 밝혔다.
한편, 현재 중국 내 전기차 업체는 니오(Nio)와 샤오펑(Xpeng)과 같은 신생기업과 테슬라와 워렌 버핏의 후원을 받는 중국 자동차 제조업체 BYD와 같은 기존 플레이어가 있다.
GUANGZHOU, China — Chinese smartphone giant Xiaomi has officially registered its electric vehicle business and said the division has entered a “substantial development phase,” the company said.
The name of the subsidiary is Xiaomi EV, Inc. and it was set up with a previously announced registered capital of 10 billion yuan ($1.55 billion).
In March, the Beijing-headquartered firm announced plans to launch an electric car business and invest $10 billion over the next decade.
Xiaomi EV now has 300 employees, the company said, and the business is led by the group’s founder and CEO Lei Jun.
Xiaomi said its electric vehicle team has “conducted a massive amount of user research” in the last five months. It has also visited industry partners while “pressing ahead with the EV product definition and team formation.”
The business has yet to unveil a car.
Earlier this month, Xiaomi announced it had acquired autonomous driving firm Deepmotion for around $77.37 million to “enhance the technological competitiveness” of its electric vehicle business.
Xiaomi, known for its smartphones and other internet-connected hardware, is jumping into an incredibly crowded space in China among start-ups like Nio and Xpeng as well established players including Tesla and Warren Buffett-backed BYD, a Chinese automaker.
