지난 목요일에 발표된 Late Post의 보고서에 따르면 중국의 바이트댄스(ByteDance)는 온라인 교육 사업을 축소하고 사내 유치원 교사의 절반을 해소할 예정으로 알려졌다.
바이트댄스가 이러한 조치를 결정한 것은 중국 정부가 에듀테크 회사의 비즈니스 운영 및 재무 활동에 엄격한 제한을 부과하고 미취학 아동의 온라인 과외를 금지하는 규정에 따라 정해진 것으로 알려졌다. 당사는 미취학 아동 중심의 사업을 축소하고 직업 교육과 같은 다른 분야에 더 집중할 예정이다.
이러한 정리해고 조치는 유아 교육 플랫폼 Guagua Long, GoGoKid를 포함하여 바이트댄스의 독립 교육 기술 브랜드인 Dali Education의 직원들에게 영향이 클 것으로 예상된다.
보고서에 따르면 Guagua Long은 8월 중순까지 모든 온라인 시험 과정의 판매를 중단하고 8월 말까지 사내 유치원 교사의 절반을 해고할 예정이다. 또한 GoGoKid는 이미 중국 앱 스토어 내에서 제거되었으며 바이트댄스는 해당 플랫폼 사업을 완전히 종료할 것이라고 전해진다.
한편, 중국 정부가 에듀테크 산업에 제한하는 규정을 발표한 것은 중국 내 교육열 과잉으로 미취학 아동들의 고통이 크다는 것, 중국 주요 도시 가족들의 교육비 부담을 줄여 출산율을 높이려는 맥락에서 진행된 것으로 알려졌다.

ByteDance is grappling with the fallout from recent regulations that impose strict limits on edtech companies’ business operations and financial activities, and completely ban online tutoring for pre-school children. The company is scaling back its Pre-K focused-businesses and focusing more on other sectors such as vocational education.
The layoffs affect employees of Dali Education, ByteDance’s standalone edtech brand that runs the short video giant’s education products, including Pre-K education platform Guagua Long and one-on-one English tutoring app GoGoKid, Late Post reported.
Guagua Long will suspend sales of all its online trial courses by mid-August and lay off half of in-house tutors by the end of August, according to the report..
GoGoKid, the company’s English tutoring app targeting kids up to 12 years old, had been removed from app stores in China on, TechNode found on Thursday. ByteDance will shut down the platform completely, according to Late Post.
The new rules are seen as an attempt to ease pressures on school children, who have suffered from China’s highly-competitive education system, and boost birth rates by reducing living costs for families in the country’s major cities.
