이탈리아 산업부 장관이 발표한 발언에 따르면 티에리 브르통(Thierry Breton) 유럽연합 산업담당 집행위원이 회의에서 유럽연합(EU)이 향후 10년 동안 칩 생산량을 현재 10%에서 20%로 늘리는 것을 목표로 하고 있다고 한다.
티에리 브루통은 지난 5월 EU가 반도체 제조를 확장하고 컴퓨터 칩 공급망을 지원하기 위해 상당한 자금을 투입할 준비가 되어 있다고 밝혔다. 그는 EU가 국내 칩 제조업체를 지원하는 것은 미국, 중국, 한국의 계획에 비견될 것이라고 말하면서 유럽 내에 대만의 TSMC, 한국의 삼성, 미국의 인텔과 같은 글로벌 3대 칩 제조업체 중 하나를 유치하기를 희망한다고 말했다.
한편, ASML의 Peter Wennink 대표는 유럽이 5년 안에 중요하게 될 산업 부문에 대한 연구 및 개발 인프라를 지금 지원하기 시작하는 것이 합리적이라고 말했다.
ROME (Reuters) – European Union Industry Commissioner Thierry Breton said the bloc aims to increase its production of chips to 20% of global supply, from the current 10%, over the next ten years, according to comments released by Italy’s industry minister after a meeting.
The EU is ready to commit “significant” funds to expand European semiconductor manufacturing and support its computer chip supply chain, the Commissioner for internal markets, Thierry Breton.
Breton said that alliance would be comparable to plans by the U.S., China, South Korea to support their domestic chipmakers and repeated that he hopes to attract one of the big three global chipmakers, Taiwan Semiconductor, Samsung of South Korea or Intel of the U.S., to build a cutting-edge plant in Europe.
ASML boss Peter Wennink said it made sense for Europe to start supporting research and developing infrastructure now for industry segments that will be important in 5 years, and where European companies already have strengths, in automotive chips and in “edge computing.”
