지난 월요일 있었던 93회 아카데미 시상식은 새로운 역사를 만들었다.
맹크(Mank)는 아카데미 10개 부문에 노미네이트되어 최다 후보작이 되었다. 맹크는 골든 글로브에서도 최다 부분 노미네이트되었지만 아쉽게도 빈손으로 돌아갔기에 이번 아카데미 시상식에서의 오스카상 수상이 기대된다.
여타 작품상 후보로는 ‘미나리’(Minari), ‘아버지’(The Father), ‘유다와 검은 메시아’(Judas and the Black Messiah), ‘유목민의 대지’(Nomadland), ‘약속의 소녀’(Promising Young Woman), ‘쇠 소리’(Sound of Metal), ‘시카고7 재판’(The Trial of the Chicago 7)이 올랐다.
한편, 이 영화를 배급한 넷플릭스는 올해 아카데미 시상식에서 전체 배급사 중 가장 많은 35개의 부분에 후보를 올렸다.
후보 명단에 넷플릭스 콘텐츠가 두드러진 것은 극장 상영을 예정했던 기대작들이 팬데믹 여파로 연달아 개봉을 미룬데다 올해에 한정하여 영화관 개봉만이 아닌 스트리밍 서비스에서 개봉한 영화 또한 자격을 갖추도록 허용했기 때문이다.
아카데미를 주관하는 미국영화예술과학아카데미(AMPAS)는 그동안 로스앤젤레스(LA) 극장에서 적어도 일주일간 개봉한 작품만 출품할 수 있도록 했다. 지난해 아카데미 후보에 올랐던 넷플릭스 영화 ‘결혼 이야기’, ‘아이리시맨’ 등도 이 조건을 충족했다.
하지만 코로나19로 지난해 3월 중순 LA 영화관이 모두 폐쇄되면서 해당 규정을 일괄 적용하기가 어려워졌다. 이에 AMPAS는 이번 시상식에 한정해 극장 상영 규정을 완화하기로 했다. 온라인 개봉작도 후보에 올릴 수 있도록 한 것이다. 이는 넷플릭스의 약진이 단순히 규정 완화가 아닌 대세 흐름이라는 분석도 있다.

“Mank” leads the pack with the most nominations with 10. The film also garnered the most Golden Globes nominations last month, but left that ceremony empty-handed. Netflix, which distributed the film, has a total of 35 nominations, the most of any distributor this year.
The film is competing for best picture alongside “The Father,” “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Minari,” “Nomadland,” “Promising Young Woman,” “Sound of Metal” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7.”
The eligibility period for this year’s nominations was unlike any other. The ongoing pandemic shuttered movie theaters around the world for much of last year, forcing the Academy to make some changes to its rules.
For this year only, the organization has permitted films that would have gone to cinemas to still be eligible if they debuted on streaming services.
